Jatayu Fights for Sita

Rama went to search for the golden deer. After hearing voice of Rama saying, “Sita… Lakshmana…”, Sita became worried and sent Lakshmana in search of Rama. Sita waited alone in their forest hut. Suddenly, Ravana came in his flying chariot. He tried to take Sita away.

Sita screamed, “Help! Help!” as Ravana flew off.

In the sky, an old eagle named Jatayu saw them. Jatayu knew Sita was like a daughter to Rama. He rushed to help.

Even though he was old, Jatayu flew fast. He fought bravely against Ravana. He scratched Ravana’s face and tried to stop the chariot.

But Ravana was strong. He struck Jatayu with his sword. Jatayu fell to the ground, wounded.

Later, Rama and Lakshmana found Jatayu lying on the forest floor. Jatayu told them what had happened and then closed his eyes forever.

Rama cried and hugged the great bird. “You gave your life to protect Sita,” he said. “You are like a father to me.”

Moral: Standing up for what is right takes courage — no matter your age or size.

Parent Tip: Talk to your child about being brave when they see something wrong.
